about

The latest single from acclaimed Gaelic singer Deirdre Graham brings together two traditional songs; Clach Mhìn Mheallain (clach veen vyah-leen) and Nighean nan Geug (nee-in nan gayk).
The first is an old Gaelic charm sung to keep the hail showers away (akin to the nursery rhyme Rain rain go away, come again another day). The second song (Girl of the Branches) is the voice of a ghost; that of a young girl’s dead mother who has come back to comfort her and protect her from harm. Together they create an atmospheric wintery ghost story appropriate for this season.

Deirdre continues her collaboration with producer Angus Lyon (Blazin’ Fiddles), having worked together on Deirdre’s acclaimed debut album URRANTA (released Dec 2020). The single continues their
exploration of orchestral textures within Gaelic song whilst experimenting further with vocal layers, unusual acoustic instrumentation and electronic production.

Deirdre says “I’m interested in the connection that Gaels have with the Otherworld; strong held beliefs and practices that connect people and place to superstitions and to the afterlife, for example, and I enjoy
how we can glimpse these in these songs.”
